Detailed Description

Position description: The incumbent will serve as a research assistant (RA) for the bioethics research program at Mayo Clinic Rochester, Minnesota. Research projects will encompass both empirical studies and bioethics work that is more conceptual in nature. Projects include ethical, social, and legal dimensions of the genomic sciences and human subjects research, as well as research topics relevant to decision making and innovation in clinical medicine, such as end-of-life care and complementary & alternative medicine.

Initial responsibilities will be in support of the NIH-funded project: “Translating Addiction Genomics Research into Clinical Practice—Examining Ethics and Policy” (PI: Barbara Koenig).

Qualifications: Candidates should have a bachelor’s or master’s degree and have demonstrated interest and experience in bioethics (for example, through coursework and research). Candidates should have familiarity with online literature databases (e.g., Medline) and must have excellent computer and library research skills.

Responsibilities: The incumbent will assist with carrying out and coordinating research on specific bioethics topics. For particular projects, under the supervision of the program manager and a post-doctoral research fellow, the RA assists with submission of grant applications, human subjects regulatory requirements, correspondence with study subjects, scheduling and (possibly) conducting research interviews, working with recording equipment, establishing and maintaining research databases, and filing of articles and research data. The RA attends project meetings in order to keep minutes of progress and needed action items, and aids in producing reports and manuscripts. The RA will work closely with the program manager and administrative assistant in arranging research meetings and scheduling conference calls. Based on experience, the RA may conduct qualitative interviews with research subjects.

To Apply: Please submit a resume, letter of interest, and writing sample to Marguerite Robinson, Bioethics Program Manager, at robinson.marguerite@mayo.edu. A Mayo-specific application will need to be completed; instructions will be forwarded to applicants after initial screening.
